Trained as a painter and sculptor, Stålhane joined Rörstand as a decorator in 1939 but was soon promoted to artistic director and chief designer. His stoneware was initially based on the technical and chemical foundation established by Gunnar Nylund, but later he developed a style of his own finding inspiration in Asian-inspired designs and glazes and constructivist art and he became one of the leading proponents of the biomorphic ideal executed in stoneware. The 1950’s brought major successes in his career with solo exhibitions in Sweden, UK and the US and a gold medal at the Milan Triennale in 1954. Stålhane left Rörstrand in 1973 to form his own studio, Designhuset. Today his works are in the collections at the National Museum, Stockholm, Industrial Arts Museum in Copenhagen, and the New York Museum of Modern Art.
