A popular design theme in Scandinavian ceramics is the handled vase or ever. Nyland was the master of this form and the piece pictured is a very good example of this. Gunnar Nylund was equally active in Sweden and in Denmark but is best known for his work at Rörstrand. He was trained as an architect in Copenhagen in the 1920’s but due to poor employment opportunities he joined Bing & Gröndahl where he stayed for five years. In 1929 he launched Saxbo with his colleague Nathalie Krebs. Despite the success of Saxbo, Nylund joined Rörstrand in 1931 following an exhibition at Svenskt Tenn in Stockholm 1930. He worked for Rörstrand from 1931–1955, the majority of the time as artistic director. He was renowned for creating modernist pieces with matte smooth glazes, including hare's fur and crystal glazes, as well as stoneware chamotte items. He later worked at the Nymölle pottery in Denmark, finally working in his own studio in Lomma, Sweden. Nylund is now one of the most respected and loved ceramics designers in Sweden. His ceramics is respresented on the Gothenburg Museum of Art, the National Museum in Stockholm and in many other museums all over Scandinavia and around the world.
