Details and Condition: A unique very early Saxbo vase in light brown glaze with incised decorations. The vase is impressed with the kiln with flames mark and “Saxbo Copenhagen”. The vase was made in the period from 1930-1932 as the Nylund-Krebs kiln with flames mark was used from 1929-1930 and the Kiln with Flames and Saxbo mark was used from 1931-1949. The dating of the vase makes it’s a most likely Nathalie Krebs piece as it dates from the period before Eva Staehr Nielsen joined the company in 1932. Nathalie Krebs established Saxbo in 1930, after a strong career with Bing & Groendahl and the small “Nylund & Krebs” factory she established with Gunnar Nylund in 1929 and which was “continued” as Saxbo when Nylund left in 1930 to become Rörstrand’s artistic director. Saxbo (1930-1968) is now widely recognized as one of the finest idependent ceramic workshops in Scandinavia witha wide and far ranging influence on several generations of ceranicists. Today, pieces are included in the collections of the Copenhagen Industrial Arts Museum, The Swedeish National Museum, the New York Museum of Modern Art and the New York Metropolitan Museum of Arts.
