Studio: Saxbo

Designer: Eva Staehr Nielsen (1911-1976)

Period: 1940-45

Country: Denmark

Size: H: 10 cm [4.3 inches], W: 11 cm [3.9 inches]

Details and Condition: Classic Saxbo style vase in the less commonly used aubergine glaze (glaze reference BJ343) developed by Nathalie Krebs in 1940. The design is probably Eva Staehr Nielsen but could also be a Gunnar Nylund design. The vase is marked with with the Saxbo yin-yang symbol, the model number 10, Saxbo Danmark used from 1937-1945) and one large dot (the markings of thrower Børre Hansen). Thus, the pice was made during WWII. Saxbo (1930-1968) is now widely recognized as one of the finest independent ceramic workshops in Scandinavia with a wide and far ranging influence on several generations of ceramicists. Today, pieces are included in the collections of the Copenhagen Industrial Arts Museum, The Swedish National Museum, the New York Museum of Modern Art and the New York Metropolitan Museum of Arts.
